To Supervisor Roberts:
The people at LLCFIRE.COM (who have widely
publicized the wildfire danger of the Stonegate/Merriam Mountains project) were extremely disappointed by your decision to
resurrect this ill-conceived project. We are also very angry. Given your action to nullify the legal vote defeating the
project on December 9, 2009, you alone have given this project an unprecedented second chance. We
assume you will now vote to approve it and ram it through the Board of Supervisors.
We represent 2,500 county residents who have taken the time to write letters, mail postcards, telephone, and/or
speak at government hearings or public meetings. These people are mobilizing and will be dedicating their efforts to making
sure you are defeated. Self-serving incumbents need to understand that there are consequences to their actions. Since
you are the most vulnerable in terms of re-election prospects, we will concentrate our efforts on you.
We assume that each of our 2,500 supporters will each be able to contact 50 voters so that we can influence a huge number
of votes to go against you. We already have many supporters who live in the Fourth District; those
of us who do not will be more than happy to make the trip down to campaign. With your defeat, Horn will be neutralized on
the BOS.
The election campaign will shape up
as “Robber Roberts - the Crooked Incumbent.” We will capitalize on the strong prevailing public
sentiment against incumbents. We will start the campaign immediately before the scheduled rehearing of Merriam Mountains.
Do you not realize that it was shameful…after 29 straight days of persistent “no comment” from
your office…for you to come forward on the very last day to
rescue the developer? Talk about a politician attempting to extract the very last drop from a developer he’s
got over a barrel? Don’t you realize that such timing fairly reeks of corruption?
Be aware that we have made the public fully
aware of the wildfire danger of the Merriam Mountain development. Be aware that we were able to strike down “Shelter
In Place” (namely, on August 31, 2006 the County officially moved to disallow Shelter In Place as the project’s
fire strategy although the project was predicated on and depended on it). Be aware that we were
able to defeat all three pro-developer incumbents at our local Fire Protection District board election, defeating them in
a landslide with 74% of the vote (by campaigning door-to-door throughout the entire district). Be aware that we were able
to obtain a position paper from the American Lung Association stating that project residents would be subjected to a
significant risk of injury or death in the event of a wildfire on or near
Merriam Mountain because of the inability to evacuate in time. We accomplished all the above without any outside contributions….
just with dedication based on strongly held principles.
Given your intervention on behalf of the Merriam Mountain developer, be aware that YOU now own this project. You
were the one to resurrect it from the dead. As a consequence, we now make you a promise. We will defeat you in
your re-election effort. We will make of you a cautionary tale…what happens
to a politician who defies the will of the public. Know that the Merriam Mountain project affords no
political cover for any politician voting for it. Only the developers and their cronies are behind it. Public opinion is overwhelmingly
against it.
We are hoping that we can remove your name
from our “hit list” and we can ignore your election and concentrate on Horn. However, we are fully reconciled
that you will vote to approve the project.
Very truly yours,
STOPSTONEGATE@CHARTER.NET
